The Shanghai Chest Hospital was founded in 1957, and is one of the pioneer hospitals in cardiothoracic surgery in the world. The SCH offers a full-range of treatments for people with heart and/or lung diseases in all stages, from the most common conditions to the most complex. They perform heart, lung, trachea, and sternum transplant, off-pump coronary artery bypass graft, valve replacement, aortic aneurysm repair, complex congenital heart defect corrective surgery and all kinds of thoracic surgeries including lung, esophageal, bronchus, mediasternum, angioplasty, and arrhythmia treatment. They also perform many minimally invasive procedures, such as robotic assist surgery.
The ICU at Shanghai Chest Hospital has 30 beds equipped with American airclean system, American HP viridia monitor, American Baxter Vigiliance continuous cardiac output and hemodynamic monitor, American Datescope and Arrow intra-aortic balloon pump, etc. All the respiratory ventilators are imported from America . The doctors and nurses in the ICU have many years of experiences in monitoring post cardiothoracic surgical patients, especially in recognizing and treating those with early in stage post operative acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome as well as heart and kidney failure. They are able to perform hemodialysis on the ICU bed for patients with acute kidney failure, which is crucial to survival. Many of them have their trainings in America.
The hospital has many state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic equipments, such as the Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA system) to diagnose heart diseases and thoracic tumor plus liver tumor , the Multidetector-Row Spiral CT for early diagnosis of diseases, the Single Photon Emission CT (SPECT) to check functional images of all systems in the body, the Linear Accelerator for radio therapy, the 3D Treatment Planning System, the Color Doppler Ultrasound, the Auto Biochemistry Analyzer, the computer simulation system (pre-operation computer planning tools), whole sets of endoscopes used in thoracic surgery, tissue-based detection, and more. All this equipment provides tools for early diagnosis and thorough treatment.
The SCH is a IIIA specialty hospital accredited by the Chinese Ministry of Health and designated as the teaching hospital affiliated to formally Shanghai Second Medical College, now School of Medicine at Jiaotong University.
