Dr. Marrry Shoao, the first female doctor to study abroad in Chinese history, founded the Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital. Dr. Shoao graduated from Michigan University in 1896. When she returned to China, she founded the Danfu Hospital and a nursing school in Jioujiang. In 1920, she and a friend, Miss. J. V. Hughot, came to Shanghai and started a Christian group. That same year, as part of the missionary trip, they founded a church, elementary school and orphanage. Dr. Shoao also established Battery Hospital (renamed Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital (SNPH) in 1952) and a nursing school. For her hard work and dedication, Dr. Shoao was named the vice president of Chinese Medicine Association.
Since 1952, the SNPH has led the way as the base of stomatology, cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, and orthopaedic surgery. Their stomatology, plastic and reconstruction surgery is now one of the best in Asia.
The hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, such as the 16-layer 3D CT, 1.5 Ts double inversion-recovery MRI, DSA, Cobalt 60, and surgical microscopes.
