The Ninth Hospital’s Plastic Surgery Unit is Now a Hospital
March 25, 2004. THE city’s well-known plastic surgical department at the Shanghai Ninth Hospital will announce the establishment of its own hospital today.
Still located within the Shanghai Ninth Hospital, the facility will no longer be a department, but a full-fledged hospital. The new status will give it more control over finance and professional development.
It remains, however, under the administration of the original authority.
“With more than forty years of history of scientific research and clinical practice, the department now performs more than 30,000 plastic surgeries every year,” said Dr. Wei Liu, the vice director of the department, “ the new establishment of the hospital allows quicker development.”
The announcement will be made at the Fist Shanghai International Plastic Surgery Conference today.
During the two-days medical gala, experts from all over the world will discuss the latest medical developments in this field.
“The leading experts will give lectures on advancements in the areas of cleft lip and cleft palate, craniofacial surgery, microsurgery, reconstructive surgery and aesthetic surgery”, said, an official from the administration of the Shanghai Ninth Hospital, in which the conference is hosted.
“For instance, Dr. Hedrick from American StemSource Inc. will give a speech on regenerative medicine,” Dr. Liu said. “He is studying how to use stem cells from a variety of tissue resources including the fatty tissue from animals”.
In the latest news, four less fortunate children will receive free reconstructive surgery to repair facial deformities at the Shanghai Ninth Hospital on Saturday. The surgeries are sponsored by the Operation Smile.
