Thought out his 30 years tenure at the Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital (EHSH), Dr. Yang has pioneered many surgical procedures in his field. He is among the first in China to perform minimally invasive, image-guided percutaneous or endoscopic procedures. He is also among the first in other procedures, such as selective hepatic artery angiography, percutaneous hepatic cholangiogram, percutaneous biliary drainage, surgical banding to treat huge liver hemangioma, and percutaneous ethanal ablation under the guide of ultrasound. His principle of surgical resection of tumour combined with other peri-operative therapies, such as percutaneous hepatic artery embolization, ethanal ablation, chemotherapy, and radio therapy, has improved resection rate for huge hepatic tumour and reduced peri-operative mortality. He also uses chemotherapy drug sensitive test to set up individual drug plans for his patients. Dr. Yang’s resection rate of liver cancer is higher then that of any of his peers. His success rate of large hemangioma is 100%. He is among the earliest to use roux-en-y gastric bypass to treat congenital bile duct cyst.
In 1993, Dr. Yang arrived at Chicago Rush University Medical Center to receive training on liver transplant. In 1995, he returned to the EHSH and started a liver transplant program. Since then he has performed fifty cases on patients as young as nine-years-olds.
