Stem Cell Treatment for Multiple Sclerosis

Stem Cell Transplant for MS

The main function of neurons, often referred as nerve cells, is to transfer neural signals. A neuron usually has a long branched structure connecting other neurons sending electronic information by sending chemical signals to their target cells. Dendrites are input channels of information. Axons are output channel of information. The longest neuron is as long as the length from your waist down to your toe.

Neurons need to send nerve impulses rapidly from one end of the human body to the other. The speed of neural signal transmission along the axon is usually 2 mile/hr. With myelin sheath, a flat cell wrapping up around the axon and creating separated insulating segments along the axon, the speed could be 200 mile/hr and faster. If the impulsive signal walks along the unmyelinated axon, it leaps over myelin sheaths along the myolinated axon. The speed of neural transmission is greatly accelerated.

Multiple sclerosis is the demyelination of the axon in the brain and spinal cord caused by many factors. It could be genetic, virus infection, stress, environmental toxin, or others.

Patients with multiple sclerosis could present any kind of neurological symptoms or signs. MS usually appears in episodes of relapse followed by periods of remission. Over the years, neurological function could be deteriorating.

Steroids are the most common drugs used to treat MS relapses. But over the long-term, it carries serious side effects.

Stem cell transplant is now used to treat MS in many stem cell centers in the world. Usually, bone marrow stem cells, adult adipose tissue stem cells, and umbilical cord stem cells can all be used to treat MS. Lumbar puncture is the most common method. Intravenous injection is also possible to treat MS but takes more injections to get the same effect as lumbar puncture according the clinical experience at one of our stem cell centers.

The majority of patients with MS have been benefited with the stem cell treatment but at different levels. To cure it, multiple times of treatment are usually needed. Some patients in one of our stem cell centers have been free of relapses and steroids for the last 2-3 years.
