The department of urological surgery at the Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital (SZH) was founded by the creator of urological surgery in China, Dr. Ru-Cheng Xiong, in 1952. It is also a urological research institute and the national training base of specialists in urological surgery and endoscopic urologic surgery designated by the Ministry of Health. They have twenty-one doctors, out of which five are chief surgeons and six are associate chief surgeons, serving 3,100 inpatients and 90,000 outpatients annually.

Since 2003, the number of outpatients has increased by 76%, the number of inpatients by 105%, and the cases of surgery by 112%. Of those surgeries, bladder cancer increased by 118%, kidney cancer by 186% and prostate cancer by 176%.

By exchanging scholars with western countries, conducting scientific research to develop new therapies, and sending surgeons abroad to learn the new technique regularly, this nationally respected center continues to build on their pioneering effort by offering the latest advances in diagnosis and treatment.

The following is some of the services they provide,

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL)

Since 1980s, the doctors in the department have treated 20,000 patients with kidney stones.

Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Urological Surgery

Since December 1993, the SZH has performed almost 2,000 cases of laparoscopic and laparoscopic retroperitoneal procedures such as adrenalectomy, nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, radical prostatectomy, kidney donation harvest, and renal cyst unroofing. Now, the da Vinci surgical system with superior 3D visualization is utilized performing prostatectomy and other procedures for patients.

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)

Transurethral Vaporization of the Prostate (TUVP) & Bipolar Transurethral Resection in Saline (TURis)

Starting in 2002, the doctors at SZH have used TUVP and TURis to treat benign prostatic (BPH) hyperplasia, and they are now first choice for the treatment of BPH.

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy and Nephrolithotripsy (PCNL)

They are one of the first centers to use PCNL to treat kidney stone and have treated 400 cases since 2006.

Minimally Invasive Surgical Treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI)

Since 2000, the Tension-free Vaginal Tape (TVT) has been used on women with SUI to help relieve the unpleasant experience for many female patients. Now, the improved TVT-o and Intravaginal Slingplasty(IVS) procedure  has been introduced to the SZH with promising results.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

Since 2000, the doctors at SZH have treated over three hundred cases of benign prostate hyperplasia, prostate cancer, and other solid tumors in the abdominal, retroperitoneal, and pelvic space with excellent results.

125I Implantation

In 2001, by using TPS systems, SZH started to implant 125I to treat prostate cancer.

Kidney Transplants

The kidney transplant program started in SZH in the 1970s, and the laparascopic assisted living donor kidney harvest and transplant began in 2004. Now, they are the first center to use the da Vinci robotic system to assist kidney transplants. They have performed over one hundred and thirty cases of minimally invasive living donor kidney transplant and achieved the best patient/kidney survival rate in the country.
